When worlds collide: determining the influences on Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) carcass presence on U.S. South Highway 97 in South-Central Oregon

The study examined the carcass data from US 97 South of Bend, Oregon. The results indicate that while mitigation infrastructure (e.g., wildlife exclusion fencing) does reduce the likelihood of carcass counts within discrete boundaries, population density as well as behavioral and environmental factors are all predictors of increasing Deer-Vehicle-Collisions on US-97.

The study examined the effectiveness of the two wildlife crossing structures placed on US 97 South of Bend, Oregon. There was an average of 94% reduction in deer carcasses in the mitigated area. The structures were built with cover for smaller animals, which compromised over 50% of all animals photographed.
